With a grin of
chocolate Peter the Peteeatrick Panda,™ stuffed with more then just love,
waddled through the pediatric unit of the hospital.
Suddenly Peter heard
some one crying. A little girl bunny needed comforting so the nurse's
stuffed animal decided to cuddle up beside her, so she did not feel
alone.
"My ears
hurt," said Hoppy the Bunny as Peter gave her a hug. "He hurt
me", she said, between her sobs and she pointed to another patient a
long-necked giraffe. "We were playing basketball and he bit my
ear", Hoppy said as Peter wiped away her tears. >From the other
side of the room came a strange sounding noise and Jeffrey the
Long-Necked Giraffe started to add his side of the story.
"And I swallowed
my tooth and it is stuck in my long neck, so I bet I will need an
operation," said Jeffrey the Long-Necked Giraffe trying hard not to
burp. "We were playing a game and the winner was supposed to take
those cookies home," Hoppy explained pointing to the box of Girl
Scout cookies. A loud burp came from Jeffrey's side of the room.
"So, you tell me
the tooth is stuck in your long neck, am I right?" Peter asked. All
Jeffrey did was burp again. "Here comes the X-ray technician with a
small camera to take a picture or an X-ray," Peter explained. Burp!
"Don't you have to go downstairs to do that?" Burp! Burp!
"Not all the time," Peter answered, "Xray machines are getting
smaller and some are portable". The technician snapped the button
and the picture was taken.
The little girl bunny
hopped over to Jeffery's bed. She had a funny looking mask on her face so
she would not catch any germs from Jeffrey in case he had a cold and was
coughing not just burping. "Can I see the X-ray Peter?"she
asked. "You have to ask Jeffrey" Peter said. "Sure Hoppy
once it is developed", Jeffrey interrupted "Burp!"
All of a sudden there
was a ring. "All done," Peter exclaimed! "What does it
look like?" Hoppy enthusiastically asked. Burp!
"It looks like
Jeffrey has a tooth stuck in his throat and the only remedy is...Burp!
Burp! Burp!" Before Peter was able to complete the sentence Jeffrey
burped again and out came the tooth flying so high it hit Hoppy in the
face. Her surgical mask protected her from getting hurt and from any of
Jeffrey's germs. The tooth was still in the air when Jeffrey scooped it
up just before it hit the ground. He put it in a box to save it in a safe
place. Since he was not sick anymore he could go home and put the tooth
under his pillow for the tooth fairy.
Peter headed over to
the box filled with Girl Scout cookies. One quickly disappeared into
Peter's mouth. Then he took two more cookies out and placed them on either
side of a dish of ice cream.
"Let's have a pow
wow about this." Taking a tape recorder microphone out of his pocket
Peter began to review all that happened..."You were playing a
basketball game. The winner was supposed to get the cookies. Everything got
really serious and Jeffrey broke his tooth when he bit Hoppy's ear."
Peter pondered."That is correct," Hoppy said. "I can agree
with that," Jeffrey added.
Jeffrey and Hoppy were
smiling at each other and said they were sorry. "Wasn't this silly
Hoppy?" asked Jeffrey. Fighting is not a fun game.
Continuing to talk into
the recorder Peter documented his opinion or diagnosed what he thought
had happened. Then he started to offer a remedy.
Seated in the middle of
the room Peter served the dish of ice cream with two cookies. He asked
Hoppy and Jeffrey to join him for a bite of sweets. "Here is a spoon
for you, Hoppy," Peter offered "and here is a spoon for you
Jeffrey."
"Games are for fun
but sometimes we take things too seriously," Peter said "that
is OK but in the end sharing is the most important thing of all."
Together they all ate their ice cream with the Girl Scout sugar cookies.
And you know something, Hoppy's ear didn't hurt as bad while the ice
cream soothed Jeffrey's throat. Both went home as best friends and
feeling much better.
